Denunciation of Godlessness
To the leader. Of David.
1 Fools say in their hearts, “There is no God.”
They are corrupt, they do abominable deeds;
there is no one who does good.2 The Lord looks down from heaven on humankind
to see if there are any who are wise,
who seek after God.3 They have all gone astray, they are all alike perverse;
there is no one who does good,
no, not one.4 Have they no knowledge, all the evildoers
who eat up my people as they eat bread,
and do not call upon the Lord?5 There they shall be in great terror,
for God is with the company of the righteous.6 You would confound the plans of the poor,
but the Lord is their refuge.7 O that deliverance for Israel would come from Zion!
When the Lord restores the fortunes of his people,
Jacob will rejoice; Israel will be glad.

Somethings aren’t as they seem. We might believe that there is a Nigerian prince who wants to use our bank account for a while to hold a few billion dollars, which, of course, we will be able to keep a portion of for our trouble. Just because we believe it, doesn’t make it so. Even when someone’s story seems legitimate, sometimes we discover things just weren’t as they seemed.
Ponzi schemes are like that. The scheme was named after the architect of one of the most successful frauds ever. Around 1910 Charles Ponzi was able to get people to give him their life savings based on a dream. The dream was that Ponzi could take their money and give a return of 50% over 45 days or double their money over 90 days. Many people fell for it. They believed it, even though it was a lie.
David realizes that there are some who believe that God doesn’t exist. They look around and they see how things are and they say in their heart, “There is no God.” Then they proceed to live as if there were no God. They live only unto themselves believing that there is no accountability. That’s what Charles Ponzi thought too. He forgot that we are always held accountable for our actions.
David sees all the actions of those who believe they will get away with all they do because “there is no God.” David prays for the day when God’s deliverance comes. On that day, there will be rejoicing. That is his prayer. May it be ours as well.
